Swirling Humanity
(Our world is marvelously big👇🏼)

Friends,
For better or for worse, I have spent a lot of time working from coffee shops in the past decade. And one of the things that is hard not to notice is how everyone—everything—is in motion.
I think it is a fascinating delight to sit still in a place where everything is moving around you. That is basically working from a coffee shop in a nutshell. That, and asking complete strangers to watch your stuff while you go to the bathroom.
But I digress.
Airports are places of motion too: humanity pulsing in and out. Swirling — and more connected than I think I realize.
American had this great welcome aboard video in 2011 that (among other things) said, “for wherever you are going, or wherever you are coming from: we’re glad you’re here.” It then, unsurprisingly, proceeds to thank the viewer for choosing American Airlines.
I’ve always loved that line — not just because it’s good branding (it is), but because it gestures at something deeper. That wherever we’re coming from or headed to, we’re still connected by the simple fact that we’re here. Sharing space. Sharing motion.
Whether in a coffee shop or a crowded terminal, there’s a kind of grace in that.
And while airlines are often (deservedly) criticized, they’re also reminders that movement is a gift. That being somewhere new — or returning home — matters. That life is precious and people are valuable.
Fly well.
