Friends,
There is no shortage of advice on how to earn points and miles. Which cards to open. Which programs to transfer to. Which redemptions are “best.”
What gets far less attention is the reason behind it all.
For me, pursuing points, miles, and elite status comes down to value and the quality of experience. Used intentionally, these systems turn everyday spending and necessary travel into something meaningfully better over time.
Points are the most straightforward piece. They are earned through spending and flying, and when used rather than hoarded, they unlock trips that would otherwise be expensive or out of reach. A consistent earning strategy compounds quickly, especially when paired with one or two programs that actually match where and how you travel.
Status is where the experience really shifts.
Airline status means shorter lines, quicker help when things go wrong, waived fees, and better seating (plus occasionally feeling special). Hotel status brings room upgrades, free breakfast, late checkout, and, in my experience, stays that are a touch more personal, even if not every time.
The biggest mistake most people make is spreading themselves too thin. Loyalty works best when you choose one airline and one hotel program that align with your home airport and destinations. Focus creates leverage. Fragmentation rarely does.
Fly well.
